The Buy Box doesn't disappear for dramatic reasons. It's almost never a policy strike or a pricing war you can point to. Most of the time it's something smaller and easier to miss — a listing detail quietly working against you every day it stays unfixed. Here are the five I see most often during teardown calls.
1. Inconsistent or missing brand name in the title
Amazon's Buy Box algorithm weighs listing quality and consistency alongside price and fulfillment. A title that doesn't match your Brand Registry name exactly, or that changes format across variations, reads as a lower-quality listing internally, even if a shopper never notices. Check every ASIN in your catalog against your registered brand name character-for-character.
2. Backend search terms duplicating the title
Wasting backend keyword fields on words already in your visible title means you're not indexing for the secondary terms actual buyers search. This is one of the most common findings in listing SEO audits: a whole field of indexing potential is repeating what's already covered.
3. Stale or missing A+ content
Listings without A+ content, or with A+ content still displaying an old product photo or discontinued variant, tend to sit with a measurably lower conversion rate. Since Buy Box eligibility factors in performance metrics, a weak conversion rate compounds the problem: fewer wins, lower sales velocity, and a self-reinforcing decline.
4. Fulfillment method mismatched to demand
FBA generally wins the Buy Box more often than FBM for the same price point, because Amazon weighs delivery speed and reliability. If a fast-moving SKU is still sitting on seller-fulfilled shipping, that alone can be the entire gap between you and a competitor holding the box.
5. Price not accounting for total landed cost
Repricing tools that chase the lowest visible price without accounting for referral fees, FBA fees, and advertising cost of sale often win the Buy Box on paper while losing money on every unit. Buy Box strategy has to be tied to contribution margin, not just the number on the page.
